The
processed strawberry milkshake is the one you would expect to be the
healthiest out of them all, right? Wrong. The chemically-filled
milkshake surprisingly contains more than fifty different substances
that are in the chemical field which add together to make the strawberry
taste. All of these chemicals are hidden behind the name of ‘artificial
strawberry flavouring’ which, according to a scientist at NCSC HQ, is
one positive contribution to skin diseases and cancers. Dr Hayden
explains ‘Most fast food restaurants are unaware of the amount of
chemical the milkshake is infused with and so refuse to cut down the
amount they decide to sell’.
Research found that 80% of
well-educated adults are also oblivious to the fact of the harmful
substances they put into their children and also their own bodies from
the processed strawberry milkshake. Professor Green, a lecturer at
Bristol University states ‘The manufacturing companies need to stop
hiding the true ingredients of the drinks behind a solid label as people
need to understand the exact components they are putting into their
bodies.’ He also believes that one or two of the chemicals bring on
cancer and other skin diseases. NCSC nutritionist, James Dean, said it
was difficult for people to know about all of the different chemicals in
an average strawberry milkshake from a fast food restaurant because of
poor labelling. ‘Without clear labelling we still have no idea of the
dangers and how many chemicals we are drinking’ she said.
We spoke
to a regular customer, Leila Jones, at a McDonald’s store in Brighton.
She was shocked at the amount of substances in the drink, ‘I just can’t
believe the general public aren’t warned’ she gasps, ‘how are we all
supposed to know this without being told? Do they expect us to just
assume?’. Following on from this piece of news Leila complained to the
head office of Mcdonald's demanding notification about the amount of
chemicals on the label of the drink.
The copied flavour has
brought on a lot of discussion between food campaigners who are yet to
decide what to do about the artificial flavour. Other than to cut it out
completely, their only other option if to give the full list of the
chemicals in the drink, and that would take a lot of space up on the
wrapping.
